Why modernization is hard – Series 9

In previous blog posts, I have mainly focused on deep technology obstacles that make legacy modernization so hard. In the concluding posts, I will share my experiences with various modernization projects and what makes the effort a Win-Win story. A key takeaway is starting modernization for the right reasons is crucial for success. If your reasons are not aligned with business values, the effort is likely to fail.

Right Reasons to Modernize

Aligning with Business Objectives:

Modernization should directly support your company’s strategic goals. Whether it’s entering new markets, improving customer experience, or enabling faster product development, the decision to modernize should be driven by how it can help your business grow and stay competitive.

Responding to Market Demands:

The business landscape is constantly evolving, and customer expectations are higher than ever. If your legacy systems are hindering your ability to meet these demands—such as providing seamless digital experiences or faster service delivery—modernization becomes a business necessity.

Reducing Business Risk:

Legacy systems can pose significant risks to the business, from operational failures due to complexity, obscurity and subject matter experts resource shortage, to regulatory non-compliance. Modernization can mitigate these risks by ensuring your systems are reliable, compliant, and secure, protecting your business from potential disruptions.

Driving Revenue Growth and reducing operational cost:

Modernizing your applications can open new revenue streams. By enabling new digital services or improving the customer journey, you can attract more customers, increase retention, and ultimately drive sales. The decision should be rooted in how modernization will positively impact your bottom line. Reducing operational cost is also a significant reason to decide to modernize provided you have established clear ROI with an end-to-end view of the effort.

Supporting Business Agility:

In today’s fast-paced market, the ability to quickly adapt to changes is crucial. Legacy systems often lack the flexibility needed to pivot in response to new business opportunities or challenges. Modernizing your systems can provide the agility required to stay ahead of competitors and respond to market shifts effectively.

Wrong Reasons to Modernize

Technology for Technology’s Sake:

Modernizing solely because a technology is outdated or no longer supported is not enough. Without a clear business case, the investment may not deliver the expected returns. The focus should be on how the new technology will support specific business goals.

Cost-Cutting Myths:

Cost cutting is a double edged sword. On one hand it provides a compelling reason to modernize and when done right can provide benefit in terms of reducing overall cost. On the other hand I have seen customers making the mistake of not considering the full picture. Having an unpragmatic view of the modernization effort almost always leads to a higher cost of total modernization and little business gain.

Vendor Pressure:

External pressure from vendors to adopt new technologies can lead to misguided modernization efforts. Decisions should be driven by your organization’s unique business needs and not by external influences that may not align with your strategic goals.

Fear of Being Left Behind:

Modernizing out of fear of falling behind in technology trends without understanding how it aligns with your business strategy can lead to wasted resources. It’s important to modernize when it supports your business vision, not just to keep up with industry buzzwords.

Conclusion

Modernization should be a business-driven initiative that aligns with your company’s strategic goals. By focusing on how modernization can support business growth, improve market responsiveness, reduce risks, drive revenue, and enhance agility, you ensure that the investment is justified and will yield meaningful returns.
